Last week we blogged with tips on How To Check Your Wheel Bearings if they require maintenance. This week we’ll be discussing How to Grease Your Wheel Bearings now that we know they need maintenance.
How to Grease Wheel Bearings:
If your axle(s) are equipped with a grease fitting or Zerk on the ends of the axle(s), the bearings must be greased every 6 months or 6,000 miles to ensure reliable and safe operation of your trailer no matter the size. If you use the trailer on a daily basis it’s never bad to apply grease more often than this time frame.
What you’ll need before getting started:
- Grease Gun (Snapper has in stock!)
- 1 Tube of grease per wheel (Snapper has in stock!)
- Hydraulic Bottle Jack
- Wheel Chocks
- Flat Head Screwdriver
- Rags or Paper Towels
Step By Step:
- Use wheel chocks on opposite sides of the trailer.
- Jack up the wheels high enough for hand turning of the wheels off the ground.
- Remove the axle cap and or rubber cover so the Zerk is viewable. If your trailer axle(s) are not equipped with grease Zerks, refer to the axle manufacturer’s manual for service and maintenance information.
- Attach grease gun to the Zerk and start pumping grease while rotating the wheel.
- Continue to pump the grease until the new grease starts coming out of the front.
TIP: Snapper Trailers recommends using different color grease each time so you will know when the new grease begins to appear.
- Remove the grease gun, wipe away any excel grease and input the cap yet again.
- Lower the wheel and repeat for the other bearings.
